BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:

Performs a variety of functions related to the environmental health of the community.  Areas of focus include implementation/development of standards for food establishments, on-site sewage facilities, and public and semi-public pools.  Conduct inspections, ensure compliance and protect public health.  Inspections may occur outside of normal working hours.  Participate in the plan review process to ensure facilities will comply with TFER standards.  Promote public health through public education and other duties as assigned.

Job Duties

S

Assist with managing food establishment inspection program to ensure compliance with the DSHS and other regulations. 

S

Assist in developing, implementing, administering and enforcing ordinances, programs, and policies related to areas of focus.

S

Works in accordance with interlocal agreements between the City and Tarrant County Public Health for food establishments, on-site sewage facilities, and public and semi-public pools during the transition to city based program.  Serve as the liaison between the City and Tarrant County Public Health as needed.

Conduct regular health inspections of food facilities, temporary food events, mobile food vendors, public and semi-public swimming pools and prepare corresponding reports.

Investigate complaints related to public health and the environment. Perform occasional emergency inspections of food establishments and public, semi-public pools and spas, and on-site sewage facilities.  Perform occasional emergency response to hazardous materials incidents.

Collect and manage data for recordkeeping and reports, complete reports as required.

Conduct plan reviews for new food, pool and on-site sewage facilities, to ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements.

Coordinate and participate in community events, outreach and education.

Serve on the development assistance committee.

Regular attendance at the assigned worksite is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of state and federal health and environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge in principles and practices of health inspection and code enforcement.
  • Ability to read and interpret laws and other regulations relevant to the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and convey highly technical information in an easily understood way.
  • Ability to effectively use word processing, spreadsheet, and database computer software. 
  • Ability to plan, organize and evaluate enforcement activities.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science field is required.
  • At least two (2) years field experience in public health, environmental health, or other related field.

    

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid Class C Texas driver license with a good driving record
  • Registered Sanitarian certification from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
  • 40 HR HAZWOPER OSHA certification or obtain within one (1) year of hire date.

 

PREFERRED CERTIFICATES:

  • TCEQ Designated Representative training
