This progressive and diverse city offers major attractions, museums, recreation, and abundant shopping to more than 130,000 residents. Waco is the 25th largest city in Texas and the county seat of McLennan County.

The Waco Fire Department responds to approximately 16,500 calls for service each year, including structure fires, vehicle fires, grass/brush fires, auto extrications, water rescues, medical emergencies, hazardous material situations, and non-emergency calls such as animal rescues, lockouts, and water evacuations. Reporting to an Assistant City Manager, the Fire Chief plans, directs and supervises all operations of the Fire Department for efficient and effective service delivery. The City seeks a decisive and assertive leader who is available, approachable, and supportive of the department and its personnel. The chosen candidate will be a person of character and integrity who is honest, fair, and consistent, and willing to hold others accountable.

The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Service Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy Management, or Business Administration as well as seven years of firefighting field experience, including five years in a senior management or command level with a municipal fire department. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A Master’s degree can be substituted for two years of required experience, and 30 college credit hours may substitute for one year of required experience. The candidate must possess a valid Texas driver’s license. Certifications for Intermediate Firefighter from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and Emergency Care Attendant from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) are required. National Incident Management System (NIMS) training is also required.
