Sarasota County Government is seeking an intern in the UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability department to work with the 4-H Youth Development Program.  This position will assist with the delivery of Extension Education programs, specifically 4-H programming through 4-H day camp and residential camps with the UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability department. A Level II background screening is required. Reports directly to the 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent. 

Sarasota County employees who work for UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County may be responsible for implementation of programs administered by the University of Florida, in compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Florida and Sarasota County. 

Intern Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participate in organized intern events.

Duties:

Education, Program and Outreach Support

  • Assist Sarasota County UF/IFAS 4-H and other faculty and staff in the implementation and delivery of 4-H youth programming for environmental education and STEM Day Camp, Camp Cloverleaf Residential Camp, and 4-H University event.
  • Assist in the preparation and development of education materials related to 4-H programming and activities and events.
  • Assist Sarasota County UF/IFAS 4-H in evaluation of 4-H curriculum, developing an inventory and assessing curriculum library needs to support our 4-H volunteers and community club programming.

Marketing and Analysis

  • Support 4-H on additional projects including developing video showcases of our events and projects and other marketing materials, such as brochures, rack cards, social media posts, potential family programming.
  • Additional duties to support 4-H such as program data entry and analysis, marketing, promotion of programs, event planning, preparation for upcoming new 4-H year.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a graduate (post-baccalaureate) degree or senior level graduate studies. (Proof of current enrollment required at time of application.)  May consider recent graduate of master's program.
  • Level II screening (DCF Clearinghouse)background check will be required for working with youth including online Youth Progteciton Training with a minimum score of 90%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Agricultural Education, Youth Development or closely related field.

Specific knowledge, skills, abilities and/or machines, equipment, special tools as required for the job

  • Background in environmental education, STEM or youth development, marketing and project management.
  • Previous science or environmental education teaching experience a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs including Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Ability to interact with community members from a variety of backgrounds and ages.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Design skills preferred.
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to six hours outdoors and be prepared for exposure to a variety of weather conditions, wildlife and insects.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to transport/him/herself to locations in Sarasota County.
