Have you ever wondered what happens to all the waste you create? Now is the time to find out! We are looking for interns to work in a variety of areas along side of our Solid Waste Division professionals. Opportunities are available to further your knowledge and sharpen your skills in recycling, disposal, and education programs. We are looking for students that are focusing their area of study in engineering, environmental sciences, and public relations. The Solid Waste Intern will work directly with the Sarasota County Government Public Utilities Department, Solid Waste Division. The Intern will interact with county staff members, County Administration and the public. Our Intern will attend meetings, tour facilities, observe day-to-day practices and complete tasks, as directed by Sarasota County staff.

Intern Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participation in organized intern events.

Job Duties:

  • Observe and participant in the day-to-day operations of the Solid Waste Division.
  • Participate in solid waste projects and activities.
  • Record keeping (i.e: Intern will be responsible for tracking one’s own time.).
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Provide support to assigned department and perform various tasks under the direction of SCGov staff.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a graduate (post-baccalaureate) degree or senior level graduate studies. (Proof of current enrollment required at time of application.)  May consider recent graduate of master's program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates currently working towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Sciences.
  • Candidates currently in upper-level classes - Junior, Senior or Graduate program, also preferred

Specific knowledge, skills, abilities and/or machines, equipment, special tools as required for the job

  • An interest in government and how it operates
  • An interest in public service and helping others
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Basic Microsoft software knowledge (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions
  • Willingness to share input on projects
