FORT BEND COUNTY

DEPARTMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

JOB TITLE: SANITARIAN

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Perform technical inspections of public and private establishments to detect possible health code violations.  Enforces state, county and local laws and ordinances concerning Health & Safety Code.  Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects and/or investigates, reports, and enforces state, county and local health laws governing operation of food service, retail food service, child care centers, mobile vendors, on-site sewage systems, rest homes, care homes, requested inspections, swimming pools, schools and public health nuisances.  Ensures operation under the rules and regulations set forth by local, state and federal regulatory authorizes.  Issues, denies or suspends retail food establishment permits administered through the Department.  Investigates and follows up on food recalls and investigation of food borne illness or disease, emergency situations, temporary food permits and illegal food operators.  Responds to and investigates reports relating to possible violations of county health code and State laws achieving compliance through communications and the courts.  Provides technical consultations and interpretations to permit holders, staff and the public.  Maintains current and accurate reports as required.  Advises property owners and operators of conditions, requirements and potential violations.  Issues Notice of Violations or citations to property owners or other violators for possible legal action.  File charges in Justice of Peace Court or County Courts.  Represents the department with testimony in court.  Signs for and is held financially accountable for equipment issued; Collects fees.  Plans daily work using computer reports, established priorities, and other work assigned.  Utilizes data entry program and completes hand written detailed reports.  Ensures standards and/or priorities are met.  Contributes to organizational effectiveness by being flexible and adaptable.  Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree with 30 hours in basic or natural Science from an accredited school.  Registered Professional Sanitarian with one year related job experience as a Sanitarian or Sanitarian in Training.  Basic knowledge of Consumer and Public Health through education and experience.  Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills; Also strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees, and elected officials.  May be required to work evenings and weekends and be available to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day; is on-call status.  Valid Texas Driver’s License.

 

SALARY RANGE:  Public Health Grade 10, $1,776.80 - $2,090.40 biweekly based on qualifications
