POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Hazardous Materials Fire Inspector is a certified task-level position that works within the Prevention Division and specializes in hazardous materials inspections, high piled storage, and other operational permits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews applications and plans as needed to ensure that businesses are applying for and receiving required permits.
  • Plans and conducts inspections of facilities requiring operational permits with emphasis on hazardous materials and high piled storage.
  • Oversees the review and issuance of operational permits as required by the Harris County Adopted Fire Code.
  • Identifies businesses that may have hazards that require special response for pre-planning and inspections as needed.
  • Provides great customer service while working to correct any fire and life safety hazards.
  • Manages time so that each project can be accomplished in the allotted time with the highest quality work being performed
  • Performs assigned tasks safely and documents and reports initial accidents, injuries, or health exposures in accordance with accepted safety practices and HCFMO policy.
  • Performs collateral duties as directed by a supervisor or senior staff member.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or GED and
  • Two (2) years of fire service experience.
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) as a Fire Inspector I & II at the time of appointment.
  • High level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, government officials, other emergency response partners, and the media.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of the Incident Management Team, in accordance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols during emergency or disaster situations.
  • A valid driver's license (Texas upon hire).

Volunteer Experience Accepted, Must Be Certified Through Texas Commission on Fire Protection

Additional Requirements:

  • Must obtain Plans Examiner Certification within 1 year of appointment.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining Incident Command System (ICS) certification at the IS-100, 200, 700, 800, levels within a year of employment.

PREFERENCES:
  • Experience in hazardous materials inspections or response.
  • Experience in high piled storage inspection.
  • NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Technician or TCFP certified Hazmat Technician.
  • Certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement ("TCOLE") as a Peace Officer and eligible for appointment by HCFMO.
  • Previous training in NIMS (IS-700, 800, 100, 200, 300, and 400).
