Job Summary

As assigned, operates a variety of equipment to successfully complete daily departmental responsibilities. Equipment may include, but is not limited to the following:  Driving a side or rear loading sanitation vehicle (non-automated vehicles) or limb truck and collecting and disposing of solid waste or limbs in commercial and residential areas; operating a street sweeper and/or backhoe at the recycle center.  Responsible for the daily safe operation of assigned vehicle and for the supervision and training of assigned contract labor.  No budgetary responsibilities.  Scheduled to work a 40-hour week, however, hours and days off are subject to change in order to meet departmental responsibilities.  Position is considered “Essential Personnel”, which requires being on duty to respond during emergency situations including, but not limited to, natural and/or man-made disasters.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs daily street sweeping duties and special requests as assigned.  Completes daily log of work performed and notifies immediate supervisor of equipment needed.
• Operates backhoe; compacts recycle materials as assigned.
• Drives a side or rear loading sanitation vehicle or limb truck and collects and disposes of solid waste from residential and commercial areas as assigned.  Disposes of yard waste and large bulky items.
• Collects and disposes of tree limbs and branches, as assigned; composts wood for recycling as mulch.
• Collects, drives and disposes of materials to be recycled and delivers recycled materials to vendors.
• Travels to and from transfer station to dispose of waste materials.
• Responds to requests and complaints and completes work orders.  Provides excellent customer service.
• Trains and supervises assigned contract labor.
• Maintains, cleans, and inspects vehicles daily for safety and performs minor preventive maintenance of all equipment.
• Maintains records of work performed for supervision such as vehicle checklists, trip logs, Department of Transportation logs and repair reports.
• Observes and follows safety rules and regulations including placing tarps on all loads for safety measures and wearing of all safety apparel, as applicable, during the course and scope of job related duties.
• Regular and timely attendance at work.
• Reports to work free from the effects of illegal drugs or alcohol and reports to work free from impairment due to prescription drugs.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Minimum Education, Certifications and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent required and 2 years of experience related to area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License and a good driving record.
