Description

PRIMARY DUTY:

Responds to all fire, rescue, medical, and other calls for service up to and including Advanced Life Support/Mobile Integrated Health depending on certification. Sustains a high level of preparedness for emergencies, and maintains station, vehicles and equipment for fire suppression/prevention. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Maintain buildings and grounds, vehicles, and equipment used in fire fighting and rescue.

 

VH

Protect life and property through fire suppression; performs rescues; responds to medical emergencies to assist EMS personnel and perform basic/advanced life support activities prior to mobile transport arrival at the scene; responds to hazardous materials incidents.

H

Conduct and participate in training, code enforcement, fire education, skill’s enhancement and testing of fire hydrants.  Educates the general public about fire prevention and safety.

Participate in pre-fire planning, prevention and inspection activities and becomes familiar with commercial building layout and chemical storage locations.

Record and report on incidents.

Assist in fire investigations as directed.

Complete special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Serve in extension of current duties as required for emergency management, particularly in the areas of fire, rescue, communications, public warning and hazardous materials.

When assigned, safely operate firefighting vehicles in emergency and non-emergency situations under all weather conditions, day or night.

Identify conditions that may result in damage or unsafe operation of fire apparatus and take appropriate corrective measures.

Regular scheduled attendance at the work site is required.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibility, but may be requested to assume duties of a higher rank due to absence/vacancy.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of first-aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through State EMS Certification.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable laws, ordinances, departmental standard operating procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to perform all firefighting functions according to department standards including use of applicable tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to understand and follow written and verbal commands.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the skill and ability in service and maintenance of operation of fire rescue and emergency medical equipment.
  • Ability to think clearly and act effectively in emergency situations.
  • Physical ability to perform assigned functions requiring physical effort, which at times may be in strained positions that may be hazardous and unpredictable.
  • Ability to report to work regularly and on time.
  • Must have the ability to maintain positive working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Must demonstrate excellent teamwork skills.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

 

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Must have and retain basic firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education.
  • Must have and retain EMT certification.
  • Valid Texas Class “B” Drivers License with good driving record within one (1) year of employment.
  • Once assigned by the department based on City and departmental needs, must attend and successfully complete courses to obtain and retain EMT-A, Paramedic, and/or the medical authority’s certifications to be an Advanced Life Support Paramedic.
