GENERAL STATEMENT:

Pump and Motor Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the daily and emergency preventative maintenance needs of the city including various pumps, motors, and controls, standby generators and related systems. Areas of work may be at any of the water and wastewater facilities throughout the city. Potential candidates must have a strong background in electrical systems troubleshooting, motor diagnostics, and general maintenance of such systems. Technician must be able to exercise sound judgment in times of crisis, and effectively communicate with other city staff and elected officials as needed. The City of Kyle Public Works Department operations are performed 24/7, 365 days a year. This position is required to be on an on-call rotation. Candidate must live within 45 minutes of normal travel time to Kyle.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Troubleshoot and correct electrical, mechanical, and piping problems as experience and training allows and as directed by supervisors.
  • Analyze, repair or replace mechanical equipment (pumps, motors, submersibles, relays, breakers etc.) as necessary to complete required repairs.
  • Assist in the installation of new utility system improvements and other water and wastewater utility related projects.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance records up-to-date, including work orders and related forms.
  • Will operate a company vehicle and be responsible for the appearance, maintenance, and organization of vehicle and tool inventory.
  • Respond to emergency calls as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to troubleshoot lift station control panel issues and should have a good understanding of signal control power as well.
  • Ability to operate an overhead boom lift safely and responsibly.
  • Works with other maintenance employees well and is open to taking direction and positive criticism.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including: Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher.
  • General operational knowledge, experience, and/or familiarity with all Public Works machinery and equipment is preferred.
  • Written Communication -Able to read and interprets written information. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills -Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) - three (3) years' experience in water and wastewater maintenance required, municipality experience preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Class "D" Water or Wastewater license within one year of hire.
  • Licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in one or more of the following: Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, or Maintenance Electrician, Class "C" or higher Water or Wastewater Operations, or Class "A" Texas Driver's License are preferred but not required.
  • Five years' of experience in municipal water and wastewater maintenance preferred, but not required.
  • Or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License and be eligible for coverage under the City of Kyle vehicle insurance provider.

The employee is frequently required to sit and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Successful employees will also be able to tolerate working at heights above ground on ladders or scaffolding as needed to effectively make repairs; must be able to climb over 20 steps vertically to reach top of treatment plant. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Any corrective eyewear required while operating a motor vehicle must be worn at all times while working.
