Job Summary

Inspect, enforce and ensure compliance with City, State, ICC, and NEC codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction, electrical and plumbing systems, energy, mechanical and gas systems and other duties as assigned.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

•Make on-site inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes; ICC, NEC, and International building, gas, energy, plumbing, and mechanical codes; verify compliance with zoning and other ordinances such as parking, and landscaping.  

•Drive to and from inspections.  

•Consult with homeowners, property owners, builders, etc., to discuss plans and compliance with minimum codes on buildings.  

•Educate general public and handle complaints regarding various codes, either on the phone, in office meetings, or during on-site inspection. 

•Consult with engineers, architects, and builders, to discuss plans and compliance with various codes often on site. 

•Review plans and specifications for compliance with codes and City ordinances. 

•Maintain computer records concerning inspections. 

•Aid other agencies with design, licensing, and code requirements in their field such as environmental department (backflow, grease traps). File required paperwork associated with State agencies to promote license compliance. 

•Maintain a cooperative working relationship with property owners, contractors, design professionals, city staff, and the public. 

•Insure safety regarding existing building, electrical, mechanical, energy and plumbing systems by determining if there is a lack of conformity with the code which presents an imminent danger to occupants. 

•Help with customer service inquires at permit office to aid in public questions to their building permit needs. Perform on site training classes to educate home builders, contractors, electricians, etc. 

•Design and draw diagrams and schematics, develops systems, policies, procedures, handouts, and other aids necessary to maintain and improve customer service. 

•Maintain accurate records and files for legal compliance, maintain computer records concerning inspections, and prepares written reports and correspondence when necessary. Recommend changes or improvements in existing codes, regulations, policies and procedures. 

•Investigate the cause, origin, and circumstances of any fire, explosion, or other hazardous condition, and order immediate evacuation of any occupied building deemed unsafe.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Five years’ experience as a building inspector, code enforcement official, or related work 
  • Valid driver’s license   
  • Must possess or be able to obtain State Plumbing Inspector License within a reasonable time period.
  • Should possess at least one of the following International Code Council residential inspector certifications and have the ability to obtain others in the following areas: building inspector; electrical inspector; mechanical inspector; plumbing inspector; and energy inspector.
  • Preferred certification as a registered State of Texas Code Enforcement Officer or ability to obtain with one year
