Job Description

Summary
Competent representation of the City of Amarillo and the State of Texas in Municipal Court to try class C misdemeanor cases, and to defend any appeals.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Must be able to quickly learn trial procedures, rules of evidence, and facts of cases.
  • Experience in dealing with the public and communicating with people is desirable.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Must be able to work well in a hectic and fast paced office environment with distractions and multi-tasking.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Must understand ethical standards applicable to prosecutors.
  • Requires strong work ethic to keep up in a fast paced office, plus the ability to quickly grasp facts and recognize the applicable law or procedure.
  • Must manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be capable of learning court software, police computer system, and the ability to prepare & retain electronic documents and records.
  • Must be prompt in work attendance, and able to work on a small team with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to courteously and effectively work with the public, judges, court clerks, witnesses, victims, defense attorneys and Police personnel.
  • Workload requires organization and follow-through.
  • Professional appearance and behavior for dealing with public and jurors.
  • Frequent noise requires ability to concentrate and maintain composure.
Licenses/Certification

License to practice law in the State of Texas.

Required Qualifications

Requires graduation from an accredited school of law.
Requires license to practice law in the State of Texas (in good standing).
Experience is not required but is beneficial.
Must have a valid Texas drivers license.
Must submit resume and cover letter with completed City application.

The City may consider all related education and/or experience in determining an applicant’s minimum qualifications and starting salary.

Preferred Qualifications  
Physical Demands

Requires good vision and hearing. Must be able to occasionally lift 25 pounds. Requires good mental stability.
Filing system requires ability to reach overhead to seven feet.
