Do you enjoy working on heavy trucks and equipment? Spend your days maintaining and repairing all vehicles, trucks, and equipment for the Sarasota County Fire Department. Come and apply today and get paid to do what you love while enjoying the many benefits that the County provides!

  • Perform diagnostic tests to identify and rebuild/repair malfunctions on all diesel, gasoline, and electric equipment. 
  • Make repairs that include overhaul of major and minor sub-systems. 
  • Perform repairs on everything from chainsaws to rescues, firetrucks, automotive vehicles, and construction equipment.                                                                                                                
  • Overhaul pumps, actuators, transmissions, engines, compressors, vacuum and electric controls and components. 
  • Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. 
  • Perform fire pump diagnostics, repairs, and pump tests.                                                                                        
  • Perform in-depth preventative maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Must be able to make electrical system servicing and repairs on the majority of vehicles and equipment assigned.                                                                                                                    
  • Utilize laptop computers to complete, verify parts/labor, and input comments to detail repairs made.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                
  • Perform emergency road services to equipment outside the garage. 

 

 

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  On-Call Required.

 

 

About You

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of mechanical experience in automotive or heavy vehicle/equipment repair. 
  • A valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement within six (6) months from the time of hire. (Paid for by the county!)
  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.
  • Complete and maintain a minimum of two (2) ASE certifications (ASE or EVT certifications). (Paid for by the county!)

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic welding experience.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. 

 

** Must supply own basic tool set and rolling toolbox upon hire. This position is eligible for a $1,200 (net) annual tool allowance.**

 

Physical Demands:  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

 

Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

 

 

 

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Range: $21.07/hr (Step 1)

Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.

 

**After completing your 6-month probationary period, you will automatically receive an extra $2.00/hour as a shop incentive, bringing your hourly pay range to $23.07!**

 

*** You can earn an additional $0.20/hr pay additive for each ASE & EVT-approved certification.***
